What is Sober Living?
Sober living helps people make the transition from inpatient drug rehab to everyday life. Immediately following treatment, people early in the recovery journey face threats to their sobriety as they navigate their day-to-day lives. After all, it takes time for the brain and body to heal and continue applying the skills learned in treatment.
For some, returning to the environment or lifestyle that led them to abuse alcohol or drugs in the first place is a bad idea. A stable, healthy, supportive environment allows a person to continue the hard work of addiction recovery is the purpose of sober living.
How Does Our Sober Living in Tampa Work?
As offered by Gulf Coast Recovery Center, sober living in Tampa provides a structured environment that allows access to ongoing outpatient rehab programs, as well as individual counseling, group counseling, and other options designed for people to achieve long-term sobriety.
Of course, the experience of sober living depends on the amenities of the residence. Gulf Coast Recovery Center’s sober living in Tampa includes:
- Affordable room and board
- 24-7 staff support
- Wi-Fi
- Single and semi-private rooms
- A fully stocked kitchen
- Washer/dryer
- Ample parking space
At Gulf Coast Recovery Center, sober living participants are expected to live by a set of rules. These rules start with total abstinence from drugs and alcohol. People in sober living residences are also expected to attend house meetings, carry out household chores, and turn in by a certain time each night.
Mornings at a sober living residence often start with daily chores, like making beds or helping serve breakfast. Afterwards, residents are expected to attend a house meeting or a therapy session at an outside drug rehab facility or outpatient clinic.
Later in the day, residents help with chores around the house or take part in some form of community service. Of course, those with work or school duties will adhere to their schedules.
Near the end of the day, sober living participants often sit down for an evening meal and may even participate in a support group session. Nights are for “free time,” whether that means calling family and friends, playing games, or watching TV.
What Are the Requirements of Sober Living?
Though it isn’t mandatory, many sober living participants complete a rehab program before moving into a sober living residence. At Gulf Coast Recovery Center, only those taking part in the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) can participate in sober living. If you are willing to remain sober and follow the house rules—and you’re actively participating in a PHP or IOP—you should feel free to apply.
As the name implies, the first rule of sober living is that residents remain sober at all times. If someone is discovered using drugs or alcohol while residing in an SLH, it is likely they will be asked to leave immediately. Aside from staying sober, most SLHs adhere to a few basic rules, including:
- A curfew
- Respect for fellow residents and staff
- Participation in activities such as support meetings and household chores
- No overnight guests
- Participation in random drug and alcohol tests
Policies regarding things like pets and cellphone use tend to vary from house to house. Some sober living residences allow pets and cell phones so long as they do not disturb other residents. Others prohibit pets since they may be “triggers,” that lead to someone relapsing.
Most sober living residences allow residents to stay for as long as they want, so long as they stay sober and continue to follow house rules.
Benefits of Sober Living in Tampa
commitment as well as constant self-care. For many people, coming home after treatment can feel overwhelming. If a person’s home life is filled with stressors or taxing relationships, the chances of relapse increase.
Yes, Tampa is known for being a party hot spot, but given its natural beauty, thriving job market, and proximity to universities containing large populations of young people, Florida’s third-largest city is also ideal for a positive sober living experience. Other benefits of Gulf Coast Recovery Center’s sober living offerings include:
- Peer support. In a sober living residence, people live with like-minded individuals, all of whom are working toward long-term recovery.
- Life coping skills. The main goal of recovery is to learn to live a productive and stable life free of drugs and alcohol. Sober living in Tampa provides the tools necessary to envision and live a substance-free life.
- Lower risk of relapse. The chances of long-term recovery from alcohol and drug addiction are increased greatly when a person does not have to face others’ substance use in their home.
- Easier transition to “the real world.” The rules of a sober living residence can help people stay accountable for themselves, their recovery, and their behavior. All are skills that will prove valuable in maintaining one’s sobriety over the long term.
