What is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

Commonly known as IOP, an intensive outpatient program is a more intensive program than traditional outpatient therapy. While traditional outpatient therapy typically involves an hour of treatment on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis, intensive outpatient treatment involves multiple hours of recovery work for multiple days each week. This level of care provides the structure and support needed to provide flexibility but also begin to create a strong foundation and support for recovery.

Our Intensive Outpatient Program Options in Tampa

At Gulf Coast Recovery Center, our intensive outpatient program includes half-day therapy sessions. These sessions last Monday through Friday, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.

We also offer virtual IOP, where in clients can work with therapists in online sessions, as well as evening IOP, which takes place Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.

Who Is Most Appropriate for Our Intensive Outpatient Program in Tampa

For some, IOP provides a “step down” in support after completing a residential treatment program or partial hospitalization program (PHP). For others still, IOP treatment represents the first step in their recovery journey. The very flexibility of IOP is what makes it such a unique form of treatment. When you call into our admissions line, we’ll ensure that you’re an appropriate fit for our IOP program. In general, clients with the following are a good fit:

  •  Those that are medically and psychiatrically stable, but still require structured programming and accountability in their daily lives.
  • Those with moderately to severe mental health symptoms including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or PTSD but do not require round-the-clock supervision.
  • Those who have a safe and stable home environment or live in a structured mental health housing program.
  • Those who are willing to engage in group and individual therapy sessions.
  • Those who are motivated and can commit to attending multiple therapy sessions per week.
  • Those who suffer from dual diagnosis disorders but do not require inpatient treatment.

Therapies We Provide in IOP

At Gulf Coast Recovery, we believe in giving individuals multiple resources to promote long-term recovery. Therapies we offer include:

Does Insurance Cover Intensive Outpatient Programming?

It is likely your private insurance policy will cover at least a sizable portion of Intensive Outpatient Program. However, certain requirements exist before that coverage kicks in.

Since 2014, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) has required that treatment of mental health disorders be considered essential health care. Healthcare.gov, the health insurance exchange website operated by the Federal government, states that all health insurance policies must cover addiction treatment, including IOP treatment. Still, additional costs like copays, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket expenses usually fall outside of insurer coverage.

Keep in mind, greater coverage is provided for treatments with an in-network provider. Contact your insurance company for referrals to these providers, or to see if Gulf Coast Recovery Center is considered in-network with your insurer. The staff at Gulf Coast Recovery Center can also help answer any insurance-related questions.

What Happens Once IOP is Completed?

After three or four months—provided the client is progressing in their recovery—the days of relapse prevention and recovery skills classes that make up a typical IOP program come to a close. This leaves the peer support, 12-Step sessions, or social support or family therapy sessions to just two or three days per week. Once these sessions have run their course, clients can either return to their everyday lives or, if needed, participate in a sober living arrangement, where they can enjoy a positive and supportive environment to further thrive in recovery.
